Complications Of Diabetes

Following are the complication that can be caused through diabetes.

Eye complications:

Damage to the eye is the most feared complication of diabetes. And no wonder: the eye is the one inch spherical marvel that gives us vision. Our vision is created when light reflects from things in our field of vision, gets focused by the cornea and lens, then travels through the transparent gel in the middle of the eye and triggers sensory nerves in the retina.

Feet complications

Foot problems in diabetes can be caused by damage to both large and small blood vessels, which is much more common in diabetes. Foot problems, including nerve damage or peripheral neuropathy, usually begin with vascular disease. Damage to small blood vessels, in particular, appears to be the major cause of nerve damage that results in loss of feeling, or worse pain and burning sensations that bother the feel and legs. Once nerve damage progresses, it triggers loss of motor control and the abnormal gait that results in ulcers and amputations.

Skin complications

Both fungal and bacteria feed on high glucose levels, and the skin is a favorite site for fungi to flourish. This disease of the legs can be very disfiguring. Women are three times as likely as men to encounter this problem. On the right, the large lesion in the lower shin in one of John's patient’s shows advanced changes. The thin, translucent-appearing skin reveals blood vessels and other subcutaneous tissues that are not normally visible.

Heart complications

Kidney complications

The human kidney is part of the body's efficient waste disposal system. A healthy kidney cleans the blood by filtering out waste products which are then routed to the urine. Over time, high blood sugars can damage the cells and tiny blood vessels that perform this cleansing. The result is a damaged kidney that routes waste back into the body and releases excess amounts of protein into the urine. Symptoms of kidney failure are fatigue, decreased appetite, nausea and vomiting.

Nerve complications

Neuropathy represents the most common complication of diabetes. Neuropathy appears to be caused by damage to small blood vessels. Nerves depend on multiple tiny vessels that carry nutrients and oxygen to keep each and every segment of these very long nerves intact. Damage to one small segment can result in loss of feeling, pain or burning sensations that bother the feel and legs.
